Demerara Sugar - Healthier than Sugar?

Demerara sugar is produced from sugarcane and consists of huge grains which give a nice, crisp texture in baking.

It originates from guyana (formerly Demerara) in South America. However, most demerara available today comes from Mauritius in Africa.

It’s typically used as sprinkles to decorate cakes and muffins however can also be added to tea and coffee.

It naturally contains tiny low quantity of syrup, which provides it a lightweight brown color and caramel flavor.

Is It Healthier Than White Sugar?

Some advocates of Demerara claim that it’s much healthier than white sugar.

Yet, there is also few health variations between them.

Contains Some Vitamins and Minerals

Demerara sugar naturally contains some syrup, that itself has some vitamins and minerals like metal, iron, metallic element and vitamins B3, B5 and B6.

In general, the darker the colour of demerara, the upper the quantity of syrup and minerals.

However, one study found that dark brown sugars like Demerara were a poor supply of vitamins, so that they could solely create atiny low contribution to counseled dietary intakes (RDI) once consumed in small amounts.

With that in mind, you ought to refrain from consumption giant amounts of demerara, as any advantages from the vitamins and minerals would be outweighed by the negative effects of surplus sugar.
